History
The first chambers of commerce and industry in the territory of Slovakia were established in Košice and Bratislava in 1850 with an important mission in business affairs. After World War II the government decree No. 306/1948 closed all chambers of commerce and industry in Czechoslovakia. Their only successor was the Czechoslovak Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Prague (ČSOPK). In 1987 a branch office of ČSOPK came into being in Bratislava, which later on received the status of the regional head office. In 1991, after a break of almost 50 years, the original structure of chambers of commerce and industry was renewed over the whole territory of the former Czech and Slovak Federal Republic. The Chamber of Košice started its activities in March of the same year.
On 3rd December 1991 the National Council of Slovakia (Parliament) passed Act No. 9/1992 concerning chambers of commerce and industry. The text of the Act itself takes into account the experience and legislation concerning chambers of commerce and industry in countries with developed market economies, and is harmonised with the legislature of countries of the European Union. On the basis of this Act, on 1st July 1992 the former ČSOPK was transformed, and an independent legal subject – the Slovak Chamber of Commerce and Industry residing in Bratislava - came into being in the territory of Slovakia. At present there are nine regional offices of this Chamber throughout Slovakia: Bratislava, Nitra, Trnava, Trenčín, Žilina, Banská Bystrica, Lučenec, Košice and Prešov.
