Population:	46,78 million.
Capital city:	Kiev 2,6 million.

Area:	603 700 km2.
Geography:	The Ukrainian landscape consists mostly of fertile plain or steppes /95%/. The country’s only mountains are the Carpathian Mountains in the west and and those in the Crimean peninsula, in the extreme south along the coast. Ukraine borders Belarus to the north /891 km/, Russia to the northeast /1 578 km/, the Black Sea to the south, Romania to the southwest /531 km/, Hungary /103 km/, Slovakia /90 km/ and Poland /428 km/ to the west.
Climate:	Ukraine has a mostly temperate continental climate, though a more Mediterranean climate is found on the southern Crimean coast. Winters vary from cool along the Black Sea to cold farther inland. Summers are warm across the greater part of the country, but generally hot in the south.

Religion:	The dominant religion in Ukraine is Eastern Orthodox Christianity. The distant second is the Eastern Rite Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. There are also smaller Roman Catholic, Protestant, Jewish and Muslim communities.
Official language:	Ukrainian.
Subdivisions:	Ukraine is subdivided into twenty-four oblasts (provinces) and an Autonomous republic Crimea. Additionally, two cities, Kiev and Sevastopol, have a special legal status.
Currency:	Hryvnia /UAH /, established in the year 1996 and equals 100 000 Karbovanets.
